The church of Santa María is, without any doubt, the best example of religious architecture in all the city. The Real Basílica de Santa María A Maior dates from the 16th century, and it was an initiative of the Mareantes society, inhabitants of A Moureira, an active sailor’s neighborhood.
Declared artistic and historical monument in 1931, Santa María combines perfectly the late Gothic with the Renaissance. At this style belongs its principal facade (16th century), by Cornelis de Holanda and João Noble, considered one of the outstanding works of the plateresque style in Galicia, it has a curious image of Sano Xerome with glasses. On the inside, you can observe the Cristo del Desenclavo (16th century), the Cristo de los Marineros (18th century) and the cross vaults. -
